What is a black hat SEO consultant in 2026?
An independent black hat SEO consultant produces diagnosis, strategy and recommendations on black hat SEO without handling execution. The distinction with a freelancer is sharp. A freelancer sells you monthly work time to do the SEO. A consultant sells expertise to decide what SEO to do. These are two complementary jobs, and confusing them is what makes many projects drift.
The main reason to hire an independent black hat SEO consultant rather than a freelancer or an agency for the upstream phase is independence. A consultant who doesn't sell execution has no commercial interest in recommending a setup he would then sell. His job is neutral analysis and honest recommendation. Agencies and freelancers sell their time, they structurally have an interest in saying that a full setup is necessary. An independent consultant can say nothing is necessary and bill for that honesty.
In 2026, the value of an independent black hat SEO consultant has never been higher, for a simple reason : the complexity of the subject has exploded. Between CTR manipulation on dedicated mobile infrastructure, large-scale Google Business Profile work, LLM visibility (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, AI Overviews), AI programmatic SEO and the building of authentic site networks, no executive can evaluate alone what should be prioritized, what can wait, and what should be refused. That's exactly the consultant's role : produce the diagnosis, prioritize and defend choices in front of an executive committee.
My four consulting formats
I offer four distinct formats, chosen based on the maturity of your situation and the depth of answer you need.
Fixed-price strategic audit
The most requested format. A scoped mission over two to four weeks, complete deliverable (30 to 60 pages depending on scope), presentation in person or video to the executive committee. Coverage : current positioning, SEO and GEO assessment, competitive analysis, identification of relevant black hat levers for your case, costed 90-day action plan, recommendation of execution providers when needed. Fixed price announced at signature. Ideal before a provider tender or a significant marketing investment.
Advisory missions by the day
For one-off needs. One day, two days, a week, depending on the question. Strategy scoping, deep dive on a specific topic (GEO, CTR, GMB), SEO copy review, prioritization workshop, support during a provider negotiation. No type deliverable, we agree at the beginning of the day what we want to produce. Ideal when you have a decision to make fast and you need an independent expert read before making it.
Second opinion on existing provider
A format unique to consulting : you already have a freelancer or an agency in place, you want to verify that what you're billed corresponds to your interest. Independent audit of the current strategy, the deployed setup, the indicators presented. Honest delivery on what holds, what is drifting, what should be renegotiated. To request before renewing an important contract, after a change of contact on the provider side, or simply when you feel something is drifting and you cannot articulate it.
Internal team coaching
For companies that want to build a black hat SEO competence in-house. Quarterly format : one day per month of operational coaching on the topics that come up in your team. Not theoretical training, coaching on the real cases your team encounters. Documentation produced along the sessions, transferable and capitalizable. Ideal for mid-cap companies that no longer want to depend on an external provider in the long run.
Areas of consulting expertise
The underlying expertise is the same as on my freelancer page, but the angle is different : here I advise on the decision, I don't handle execution. Six areas are regularly requested in consulting.
CTR manipulation strategy
Evaluation of the CTR opportunity on your target pages, calculation of the positioning threshold above which the lever becomes profitable, infrastructure recommendation (dedicated 4G, carriers, volumes), criteria for selecting an execution provider, indicators to monitor to detect penalty before it hits. I cover this in detail in my public guide on CTR manipulation.
Google volume engineering
Advice on the Google Suggest opportunity for your brand, Google Trends, Discover. Analysis of your editorial maturity for each lever, prioritization of workstreams, expected impact estimate, sequencing recommendation. Typical case : deciding whether to tackle Google Suggest before or after an editorial overhaul.
Google Business Profile strategy
For brands with local presence, assessment of current GMB maturity, identification of applicable black hat levers without risking profile suspension, ROI calculation on the local pack, recommendation of execution provider if needed. Particularly useful for multi-location profile networks.
GEO and LLM visibility strategy
The fastest-growing consulting topic in 2026. Audit of your current presence in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and AI Overviews on your critical queries. Identification of the precise competitive gap. Scoping of the GEO injection setup to deploy. Time-to-impact estimate. Advice on budget allocation between classic SEO and GEO.
PBN architecture and gray hat link building
For projects considering a modern PBN, advice on architecture, domain sourcing, link calibration, propagation pace, penalty risk. Also advice on evaluation of existing link building offers : what is worth its price, what is being oversold for nothing.
AI programmatic SEO governance
For sites producing or planning to produce pages at scale, scoping of quality governance, template calibration, anti-detection mechanisms, cohort tracking to measure real impact per page batch, stop criteria if drift.
My four-phase audit methodology
All my fixed-price strategic audits follow the same framework. I make it transparent here because it's a legitimate selection criterion for you : you know what you're buying before signing.
Scoping
Kick-off meeting, access to your tools (Search Console, Analytics, current SEO tool), sharing of essential business data (revenue, margins, customer acquisition cost), exact scope definition, objectives and success indicators. Output : a signed scoping document that serves as reference for the rest of the engagement.
Investigation
Deep analysis. On-page audit on your strategic pages. Search Console analysis (positions, impressions, clicks, CTR, emerging queries). Competitive analysis with third-party tools (Semrush, Ahrefs, SEObserver depending on what you have). GEO audit on your critical queries (manual testing on the main LLMs). Mapping of opportunities and risks. Intermediate notes shared along the way, no black box.
Synthesis and writing
Deliverable writing. Between 30 and 60 pages depending on scope. Typical structure : one-page executive summary for the management committee, SEO and GEO diagnosis, identification of prioritized levers (top 5 costed), 90-day action plan organized by workstream, recommendation of execution providers if needed, methodological appendices. The document is designed to be read by a non-SEO executive as much as by an operational expert.
Presentation and transfer
Oral presentation of the deliverable in video or in-person to the committee you choose. Questions, debate, on-the-fly adjustments. If you decide to engage an execution provider, I can do a structured transfer : briefing of the provider, sharing of the deliverable, follow-up on the first 30 days to validate that execution starts in the right direction. This transfer day can be added as an option after the audit.
Representative engagement examples
A few anonymized examples (standard confidentiality clause on all my engagements) that illustrate the angles I cover in consulting.
Marketing direction of an e-commerce group, strategic audit before signing a six-figure annual agency contract. Three-week engagement, 52-page deliverable, executive committee presentation. Identification of two black hat levers (CTR + GEO) that the shortlisted agency didn't cover, and a third lever proposed by the agency that I recommended rejecting (disproportionate penalty risk vs expected impact). The agency contract was signed after perimeter renegotiation. Estimated first-year savings : tens of thousands of euros on an unnecessary line item.
Second opinion for a personal service brand on an SEO agency in place for 18 months. One-week engagement, honest delivery to the executive. Diagnosis : the agency did correct work on classic SEO but completely ignored the GEO dimension on category queries above 80,000 monthly volumes where the brand was invisible to LLMs. Recommendation : renew the agency contract with a GEO module add-on, or add a specialized freelancer in complement. The client chose the second option, measurable ROI within six weeks.
Quarterly coaching of a four-person internal SEO team in a mid-cap company. One day per month over six months. Topics covered along the sessions : GEO audit, CTR calibration on the group's infrastructure, setting up a quarterly schema review, ramping up on AI programmatic SEO. Documentation produced and capitalized internally. The team is now autonomous on 80% of decisions, calls me on one-off missions when a topic exceeds their expertise.
Consultant vs freelancer vs agency : what's the difference?
The confusion between these three professions is the most frequent trap I see in first conversations. Here's how I distinguish them in practice.
| Criterion | Consultant | Freelancer | Agency |
|---|---|---|---|
| Core business | Audit, advice, recommendations | Operational execution | Full-service |
| Typical engagement | Short fixed-price or day rate | Monthly over 3-12 months | Monthly or annual |
| Main deliverable | Strategic document | Measurable SEO results | Advisory + execution mix |
| Independence | Maximum (no execution) | High (single actor) | Variable |
| Best fit for | Decision, audit, second opinion, training | Execution of a clear strategy | Full outsourcing |
| Relative pricing | High per day, short term | Moderate, mid-term | High, long-term |
| When to hire | Before signing execution | When strategy is clear | When delegating everything |
The central idea : a consultant and a freelancer are not competitors, they are complementary. Many of my consulting engagements end with the recommendation of a freelancer or an agency for execution. And many freelancers and agencies subcontract their upstream diagnosis to me.

Black hat consulting isn't reserved for large accounts. If you're a small structure with an important SEO decision to make, a short-format day of consulting can save you from a structuring mistake. If your budget doesn't allow a full fixed-price audit, we can scope a lighter mission focused on the most critical lever for you. First conversation is free, that's exactly what it's for : calibrating the format that matches your situation, without pushing a full audit if it's not relevant.
Pricing and formats
All engagements are custom-quoted by format. Transparency on formats lets you request a quote on the right scope.

My ethics commitments
The independent black hat SEO consultant profession rests on trust. I hold three simple but structuring commitments that define how I work.
No operational execution for consulting clients. I don't take execution engagements at a client to whom I sold an audit in the previous 12 months. This rule protects the independence of advice : if I know I can sell execution downstream, my audit is no longer neutral. If you want full execution, I redirect you to my black hat SEO freelancer offering as a distinct service, or I recommend a third-party provider from whom I have no kickback.
No hidden commission on provider recommendations. When I recommend a freelancer, an agency or a tool in an audit, it's based on their relevance to your case, never on a commission they would pay me back. I spell this out in contracts. This rule is what distinguishes an independent consultant from a disguised affiliate.
Refusal of conflict-of-interest engagements. I don't accept two competing engagements in the same geographic and category sector during the same period. If I advise a French furniture e-commerce, I'll refuse during the same period an engagement for its direct competitor. This rule limits my revenue, intentionally : it's what allows me to produce advice without mental reservation.
Why work with me as a consultant
Three concrete reasons verifiable publicly.
First, I publish my methodology and positions publicly. My site and my X account @CTRBooster75 (2,798,678 impressions and 2,378 new followers in May 2026) are open windows on how I reason. You can evaluate my expertise level before paying a single euro. My CTR manipulation guide and my French SEO influencer ranking 2026 provide a precise reading of my view of the profession.
Second, my independence is structural, not marketing. I don't own an agency, I don't sell a SaaS tool from which I would earn royalties, I don't have provider referral kickbacks. My income comes exclusively from audit, consulting and coaching that I bill. It's the condition for my advice to stay neutral, and it's deliberate.
Third, I have ten years of real operational practice before moving to consulting. I'm not a consultant who has never touched a 4G proxy or written a prompt line. I have a network of more than two hundred sites I've operated, hundreds of CTR and GMB campaigns piloted in-house, hundreds of hours on GEO optimization. When I advise a freelancer or an agency for execution, I know exactly what their day-to-day looks like, which makes my recommendations applicable and not theoretical.
FAQ : the questions people ask in consulting
- What is the concrete difference between a black hat SEO consultant and a black hat SEO freelancer?
- A consultant produces diagnosis, recommendations and strategic scoping without handling execution. A freelancer sells you monthly work time to do the SEO. Both exist in parallel. You can perfectly hire a consultant to scope your black hat strategy, then assign execution to a freelancer or agency on that basis. It's often the most cost-effective setup because it separates decision from execution.
- Why hire an independent consultant rather than an agency?
- Independence. A consultant who doesn't sell execution has no commercial interest in recommending a setup he would then sell. His job is neutral analysis and honest recommendation. Agencies and freelancers sell their time, they structurally have an interest in saying a full setup is necessary. An independent consultant can say nothing is necessary and bill for that honesty.
- How much does a black hat SEO consulting engagement cost?
- Custom-quoted by format. Fixed-price strategic audit over two to four weeks. Advisory by the day for one-off sessions. Second opinion at flat fee. Quarterly coaching retainer. Budgets range from a few days of consulting to several weeks depending on the depth required. First conversation free to estimate.
- What kind of clients do you serve in consulting?
- Marketing directors wanting to understand before signing with an SEO provider, executives wanting an independent second opinion on their current agency, SEO agencies validating their strategy before a tender, M&A investors needing a black hat audit in due diligence, internal teams in training. For smaller structures we can scope a lighter mission on the most critical lever.
- What is an SEO second opinion and when should you ask for one?
- An independent audit you request from a third-party consultant on your current provider's work. It serves to verify that actions taken match your interest, recommendations hold up and the engaged budget produces expected value. Request it before an important contract renewal, after a contact change on the provider side, or when you feel something is drifting without being able to articulate it.
- Do you do consulting subcontracting for agencies?
- Yes. Several French SEO agencies subcontract their black hat or GEO consulting workstreams to me on specific client projects. Under NDA, deliverable in the agency's name for their client, or as a directly involved associate expert. Growing usage : agencies keep the execution and delegate diagnosis to an independent consultant.
- How does a fixed-price strategic audit work concretely?
- Four phases over two to four weeks. Scoping in one week (objective, perimeter, access, kick-off). Investigation in one to two weeks (Search Console analysis, SEO tools, GEO audit, competitive analysis). Synthesis in one week (30-60 page deliverable with diagnosis, prioritized levers, costed action plan). Presentation in one day (delivery to the executive committee, transfer to the chosen execution provider).
- Can you support execution after the audit?
- Not in direct execution (independence ethics commitment). However, I offer a structured transfer day to the chosen execution provider (briefing, deliverable sharing, 30-day checkpoint to validate that execution starts in the right direction). For complete execution, see my black hat SEO freelancer services, a separate offering I do not combine with a consulting engagement at the same client within 12 months.
